about

There is a distance between the dance floor and the late-night headphones session; a dissonance between what moves the body and the soul. Most of us live somewhere in the space between. Somewhere between waking and dreaming.

When we’re walking through our days, humming a tune, what is it we’re really doing? Is it mere memory recall, or is it communication? When we’re belting out a chorus alone in the car, are we performing or are we communing?

We think music is a companion we can’t see—an invisible friend that walks beside us and catches us when we fall. We think the world is ready to acknowledge these Different Angels. So we’re giving you two songs to see if the time is right. Equally at home at the club or on the hi-fi, this is rhythm and melody without artifice or expectation.

Recorded in the Pacific Northwest, the Eastern Seaboard, the Redwood Coast, and the British Isles by four friends, song skeletons were sent around the globe until they took form as living, breathing entities. Not that it was a highly organized process—sometimes new parts were being added without the benefit of hearing what the others had already done.

This brought an element of serendipity to the sessions. As a result, you’ll encounter unexpected detours, u-turns, and off-ramps as you travel the soundscape. It’s a lot like the feeling the group experienced while working together—the act of sending an unfinished idea out into the world and having it come back complete in unimaginable ways.

What emerged out of the process might just be a new kind of pop that’s semi-instrumental: short pop songs with five minute outros; instrumental mindscapes with a little bit more songsmithery on the front end. Whatever it is, we haven’t heard it before, and maybe nobody has.

Some might describe Different Angels as a super group. But of who? Does it matter? Do we need to know angels' names to believe in them?
